In honor of NY Comic-Con starting today, here are some of my favorite portraits from last year:

NY Comic-Con Portraits

I can't help it. October brings out the giant nerd in me. I start geeking heavily in August as it gets closer. September is almost unbearable, waiting, hoping, saving money, checking the website for information. Then in October, it's finally here. NY Comic-Con. This year, presented by Sprint. This year, bigger than ever before, taking up the entire Javits Center. I was there for professional's sneak preview and all day Saturday, the biggest day of the event, and still it felt like there wasn't enough time. Between running around to meet my idols, like Mark Texeira (artist for Moon Knight) and Amy Mebberson (artist on the Muppets, who drew me a Green Lantern Swedish Chef and Dr. Teeth as Thor), fighting through crowds to get free swag, and being generally and genuinely overwhelmed, I managed to focus on shooting some of the amazing cosplayers. This is the beginning of a new project of portraits of those who dress up for conventions such as this one.

Caitlin

In late May, Caitlin McColl, a classically trained actress I met at a casting, was kind enough to do a shoot with me in Central Park a few days before she was due to move out of New York City. Though she still had to pack up her whole life into the back of a pickup truck (which would get soaked in the rain during the move), she was gracious enough to spend enough time until we got some images we were both happy with.

Baby Maren, Take Four: A Partner in Crime?

I never really had the chance to watch a child grow up, as an adult-ish at least, so seeing Maren become a real person has been amazing. She's two-and-a-half and as her parents proudly say, advanced beyond her age. And now, she has a little brother to help raise/boss around. I imagine much silliness and cuteness in the near future. In order to secure my position as favorite "uncle," and more insidiously, to influence their favorite animals, I brought them a stuffed dog and bear.

Baby Maren, Take Three: Revenge of the Toys

Only 2 months since my last visit, and Baby Toddler Maren is growing so quickly. She's becoming an actual human! It's amazing, the strides she's made: now, she's a strong walker, can speak (though still not as well as I can) and likes to show off her toys, of which she has MANY. I am SO proud of her and her parents, and am amazed at their ability to teach and support a tiny human. You can see from her outfits that she's already having great values instilled!

Baby Maren, Take Two: Toddler Days

Baby Maren is now 18 months old, which means she's still pretty adorable. In six months, she'll hit the terrible twos, which is when toddlers are horrible and impossible to deal with. Or at least that's what my mom said about me. Braving the Lincoln Tunnel and the cold, I went to Jersey to see my friends and baby toddler Maren. Delicious dinner, good conversation, and photos transpired.
